Poem Of Life: It’s Not Over Yet!!

When I Was Young....

The Baby Boomers of today are facing a major change in life…retirement. What happened? Weren't we protesting in the streets, enjoying free love, and doing drugs just a few years ago? (Well, maybe you guys were but I was a good, upstanding young man…cough, cough). How did we get so old?

Remember tidbits of our youth,
a pony ride, a new found tooth.
All was fresh, all brand new,
watching ants, when we were two.

A year would pass, and we’d feel proud,
“I’m three” we’d boast and state aloud.
We’d add a new word every day,
with age came oh so much to say.

Time would pass and we’d feel old,
“Watch your sister” we’d be told.
But playing held importance more,
we were still young, yes only four.

Kindergarten next helped us grow,
laughing, singing "boats to row".
So many kids, buzzing hive,
we found our place when we were five.

Our first grade teacher, what a dish,
we’d love her forever, or so we’d wish.
Reading, math with “pick up sticks”,
so much to learn when we were six.

How quickly all the years went by,
we found ourselves in junior high.
Changing classes, lockers too,
homework, chores, so much to do.

A Senior now, in our high school,
all are younger, our time to rule.
prepare for college, grades enhance,
fall in love, attend last dance.

We graduated the university,
believed we knew just what to be.
Real life ahead, not for the meek,
career path varied, interests tweaked.

Our work is over, retirement,
collecting checks from the government.
We watch the youngsters from afar,
forgetting sometimes who they are.

Fill in the gaps, of your life’s course,
if you wronged, feel remorse.
Remember those that now you miss,
Father’s stories, mother’s kiss.

Appreciate those you’ve given seed,
enjoy their smiles, an endless need.
Raising children, grand kids too,
cherish all love they give to you.

Whoa, life’s not over, get off your tail,
share your experience with those who fail.
Find new hobbies, adventures pump,
it’s time to live, let’s bungee jump!

Is It Time To Choose?

We can live in the past, or remember our motto from the 60’s…
“Today is the first day of the rest of your life!”
The choice is yours!
